Step into Karma Rags and take a peek into the colorful brain of shop creator and curator Cheryl Carlson. Karma Rags is more than just a thrift store, it is a full-on experience of texture and color – a realm of gently worn wearable art. Walls and racks are filled with vibrant, detailed, unique clothing – some vintage, some contemporary, all hand selected by Cheryl to fit her aesthetic. The journey for Cheryl is less about finding clothing that fits her style and more about finding the perfect person for the piece. She values the journey that clothing takes to be created and works hard to bring awareness to reducing waste through thrifted and upcycled clothing. Each piece that Cheryl finds has a character all its own, and she loves seeing each piece find a new home and continue its story.

Since its inception 13 years ago, Karma Rags has grown from a traveling clothing rack seen at local Five Points neighborhood markets, to a small brick and mortar shop at the original Flying Monkey’s location on Putman Drive, to a cornerstone of the Flying Monkey Arts second floor location at Lowe Mill ARTS & Entertainment. Cheryl is currently expanding her shop yet again, and will celebrate the occasion with a Karma Rags Day celebration on November 19. Cheryl strives to use Karma Rags not just as a business, but as a platform to build community and raise awareness on issues that are important to her. From homeless outreach and microgrants to independent businesses and artists, to raising awareness on workers’ rights and safety in manufacturing conditions; a trip to Karma Rags allows patrons to support local business while learning more about the global impact. Cheryl’s keen eye for combining color, texture, and patterns take the thrifting experience to a whole new level.
