Thursday - 14th - Acoustic Cabaret featuring Phil Weaver,
Admission $7/$5 Students (7:30)
What
do you
get when you combine a cigar-box guitar, a Jose Ramirez classical
guitar from Madrid, an electric guitar, and an assortment of congas and
all kinds of percussion paraphernalia? The answer is the
Classical-Blues Cabaret, a really cool concert to go to on
Valentine’s Day. Performing will be Microwave Dave Gallaher,
classical guitarist Phil Weaver, and percussionist Ivy Joe Milan. The
show will begin at 7:30 pm in the Flying Monkey’s new theater
on
the second floor of Lowe Mill. Admission is $7 for adults and $5 for
students.
The
Classical-Blues Cabaret began as an experimental concert at the Flying
Monkey several years ago with Phil and Dave, and has been an audience
favorite from the beginning. The Classical-Blues Cabaret has performed
at Birmingham City Stages, the W.C. Handy Festival, Concerts by the
Lake at Guntersville, City Lights and Stars at Burritt Museum, and
Three Caves. The music will include Delta blues, Bach, Bob Marley, and
Piazzolla tangos as well as improvisation. Dave will rip it up on the
cigar box guitar, Ivy Joe will play his African drum solo, and Phil
will perform one of his virtuoso Spanish guitar pieces. All three of
these guys have a zany sense of humor, so be prepared to have your
funny bone tickled as well as your ears.
Dinner
can be ordered in advance from Tina's Cantina for $10. The meal
includes lasagna (beef or veggie), salad, vegetable, bread, and a
bottle of water. (Feel free to bring your own bottle of wine).

Dance
COLEctive (TDC) Artistic Director Margi Cole brings her full company to
perform for the first time in Huntsville with the Dance COLEctive Southeast Tour - Huntsville,
a collaboration between the Flying Monkey Arts Center and TDC - a
Chicago-based contemporary dance company. The six-day visit, which
includes master classes, workshops, collaborations with educational
institutions, and performances, promises a wide exposure for an art
form that has little exposure in this area of the state. The visit
culminates in two performances of the company’s seminal work Written on the Body, Improper Contra inspired by our participation in local Contra dances and a unique
collaborative improvisational work with local guest artist Phil Weaver
at the Flying Monkey Arts Center on Thursday and Friday, April 3 and 4,
at 7:30 pm.
Throughout the Huntsville visit, The Dance COLEctive will focus activities on Written on the Body,
a work which uses the lives of the Brontë sisters as a point of
departure in its exploration of gender roles and stereotypes. The
hidden identities of authors Charlotte, Emily and Anne Brontë, as
well as the hardships they endured throughout their lives in Victorian
England, provide the framework. Cole interprets the Brontës’
masculine and feminine personas, using images of power, strength,
vulnerability and intimacy, exploring how each attribute can be related
through movement.

Sunday - 13th - Acoustic Salon hosted by Phil
Weaver, Admission $5 (3pm)
It’s Sunday afternoon, it's hot, it's miserable, it's still the
weekend but there's nothing much to do but watch infomercials on the
TV until your brain turns to mush...or is there another option? Check
out the Acoustic Salon at the Flying Monkey. It's a one hour show with
guitarists Phil Weaver (AKA Will Fever) and Emily (deelybobber) Jones,
pianist Ingrid (too tall to mambo) von Spakovsky, and percussionist
Ivy Joe (congameister) Milan. But there's more - many of the selections
will be performed with abstract animation by Stanley Hendrix. The best
word so far to describe Stan's artwork is psychedelic- you have to see
it to believe it. You get to tickle your ears, your eyes, and it's all
in air conditioned comfort at the Flying Monkey Arts Center' newly renovated
theatre. The music will include works by Piazzolla, Morel, Cardoso,
and Garoto. There will be a reception after the show. A fun, happening
Sunday afternoon in Huntspatch, sounds implausible, but it could happen.
Really.

Friday
- 17th - Anti-Fashion Show, Admission $10 (9pm)
The Anti-Fashion Show is a collaboration between Iris Billiter of Irisewn Design and Cheryl Carlson of Karma Rags, both located here at The Flying Monkey Arts Center. The show takes place on Friday, October 17th at 9 PM at The Flying Monkey Arts Center Theatre. A reception will follow where guests can relax and see featured work up close, select items to purchase, and place orders with designers.
Anti-fashion can mean many things. In this case it means gathering the work of local DIY [do-it-yourself] designers, plus vintage clothing and vintage blend clothing, then showcasing it in a dramatic runway show with music and incredible atmosphere. Anti-fashion is imaginative, dramatic and defies mainstream fashion ideals.
Do-It-Yourself designers take old clothing or discarded materials such as rubber or plastic and create new, exciting, and more relevant clothing. Our featured DIY designer is Iris Billiter who will present 10 new couture works created from vintage clothing originally offered in Karma Rags. Iris Billiter has created several other lines of dramatic DIY fashion and is well-known for her edgy runway shows. Other highly talented local DIY clothing artists will also present significant current works that will prove exciting in style and demonstrate excellence in design and craftsmanship.
Vintage and Vintage Blend features the unrivaled construction, timeless style and creativity of older clothing by presenting it in a contemporary setting. The clothing in this portion of the show will be directly from the floor of Karma Rags and is ready to wear. Vintage clothing, when well-crafted and designed, never goes out of fashion. Vintage blend, a more relaxed way of wearing vintage, mixes eras and can range from a flouncy frilly 1950's dress with combat boots to an early 1970's pointed collar shirt with new jeans. Many of the vintage and vintage blend pieces will be available for purchase.
Attending The Anti-Fashion Show is an important step you can take in re-considering how you view fashion. Anti-fashion is rebellious, sustainable, and challenges the way society has influenced our clothing selection. Anti-fashion aims to create a higher degree of individuality in how we cover ourselves and moves us to be more thoughtful about the resources, both human and non-human, that’s required in making mass-produced clothing. Anti-fashion is accessible, incredibly fun, and anyone can do it!
Proceeds will benefit Sister-To-Sister, a local grassroots non profit mentoring and small loan entity, which provides no interest loans to low income working women in the Huntsville community. Saturday
- 1st - Michelle
Malone (Solo Acoustic Blues), Zapatos Perdidos (Phil Weaver &
Emily Jones), Admission $10 (8pm), Sponsered by the Fret Shop
Michelle Malone performed
with her band at City Lights this past summer and about blew the top
off the mountain. Saturday, November 1st she will bring her solo acoustic
show to the Monkey’s upstairs theater. (This performance is sponsored
by the Fret Shop) Her solo shows are more intimate, have a lot of audience
interaction, and cover a broader depth of her writing; this is a rare
opportunity to hear a major artist in this setting.
As well as being voted best blues guitarist on IAC.com, her album Sugarfoot has earned Malone critical acclaim on many "Best Of" lists including The Blues Critic Top 10 albums of the year, Americana Album of the Year by I.A.C., and was on the GRAMMY ballot for Best Contemporary Blues Album. Rave reviews include this one: "Sugarfoot is as raw, magnificent, dirty and low down as anything you'll ever want to hear in blues music - our blues-breaker CD for the week" - Dan "Elwood" Aykroyd, House of Blues Radio Hour.
Since Malone began her musical journey over 20 years ago, she has averaged over 200 days a year on the road, and has shared studios, stages and tours with such blues legends as Albert King, Charlie Musselwhite, Johnny Winter, Little Feat, ZZ Top, Marsha Ball and Chris Whitley, as well as folk icons Indigo Girls, Shawn Colvin, Jackson Browne and Pop Star John Mayer. Malone’s live show is not to be missed - she can make the biggest venues seem as cozy as a camp fire, and an intimate venue feel like the center of the universe. Her CD’s and other merchandise are available at www.michellemalone.com.
Also on the bill is Zapatos Perdidos, the guitar duo of Phil Weaver and Emily Jones. Their set will feature the music of the Brazilian composer Celso Machado, as well as the flamenco inspired Rondalla Aragonesa by Granados and other works (including the Deely-bobber song Morenita do Brasil). Bring your deely-bobbers, bob along with Zapatos Perdidos, and get ready for some high energy acoustic music.

Moondust Big Band & Holiday Potluck Bring some Holiday goodies to share
and then dance it off! Moondust Big Band is seventeen incredibly talented
musicians playing the music they love. Moondust's focus is on traditional
Big Band music -Ellington, Dorsey, Miller, Basie. This band understands
the importance of blending; working on the subtleties of style, intonation,
dynamics and attitude. Eric Rogers and Judy DiMaso had the idea to start
the band while reminiscing about their own Big Band experiences. By
the time Summer of 2007 arrived, they had recruited musicians who love
the music as much as they do, begun rehearsing, and the band has been
swingin' like nobody's business since they set eyes on the charts.
