Looking for something to do on Valentine's Day besides wait in line
forever at a restaurant? Come out to the Monkey for "My Monkey Valentine"
an Acoustic Cabaret with the lovely ladies of the string quartet Felicity
and classical guitarist Phil Weaver. Admission to the show, which starts
at 7:30 pm, is $8 for adults and $5 for students. An extra feature for
this year's show is that Tina's Cantina will be offering box suppers
for $10.95, including an entrée, salad, and dessert. These must be ordered
in advance no later than Wednesday, February 14th, 11:00 am by calling
Tina's Cantina at 457-0977 or by email,
tinas.cantina@yahoo.com. You can pick these up after 6:45. Bring
your own beverage or soft drinks and snacks will be for sale at the

Felicity is Mary
Anne Zollar and Mary Peck on violins, Rodena Tharpe on viola, and Gonca
Huff on cello. Some of them have been performing together for 10 years,
and their repertoire ranges from classical to rock. This year Gonca's
husband will be performing with Felicity on double bass. Phil Weaver
is the Flying Monkey's own "classical guitarist in resonance" and will
be playing a set of duets for guitar and cello with Gonca (one of them
was composed by Richard the Lionhearted in the 12th century-a golden
oldie) in addition to tangos by Piazzolla and other solos. Phil and
Felicity will swap sets as well as collaborate on Vivaldi's Concerto
in D (the second movement is excellent make out music FYI). Bring your
sweetheart or your spouse, or both if you're so inclined for MY MONKEY
VALENTINE.

the tale of a small-town rocker's odyssey from obscurity, to chart-topping
heavy-weight and beyond. The Bhagavad Meat Loaf is a glowing tribute
to one of rock's most misunderstood and maligned figures. Love him or

the depths of despair and back again. For his journey is really our
own. Come rock with us, won't you?

- Plagues &
Pleasures on the Salton Sea, Admission $5 (8pm)
Co-Director CHRIS METZLER will present his film and be on hand for
a discussion after the film.
While PLAGUES & PLEASURES covers the historical, economic, political,
and environmental issues that face the sea, it more importantly offers
up an offbeat portrait of the eccentric and individualistic people who
populate its shores. It is an epic western tale of fantastic real estate
ventures and failed boomtowns, inner-city gangs fleeing to white small
town America, and the subjective notion of success and failure amidst
the ruins of the past. Hair-raising and hilarious, part history lesson,
part cautionary tale and part portrait of one of the strangest communities
you've ever seen, this is the American Dream gone as stinky as a dead
carp.

11th - Phil Weaver, Admission $7 for Adults, $5 for Students
(8pm)
Acoustic Cabaret with Phil Weaver and Friends at the Monkey Classical guitarist
Phil Weaver and friends will perform an Acoustic Cabaret Thursday, October
11th, 7:30 p.m. at the Flying Monkey Arts Center, 2211 Seminole Drive. Admission
is $7 for adults and $5 for students. Unless a bolt of lightning finds him
first, Phil will turn fifty on that day, and will celebrate the occasion by
performing with his musical friends blues guitarist Microwave Dave, percussionist
Ivy Joe Milan, pianist Ingrid von Spakovsky, violinist Nadja Skyler, and Nick
Walker on upright bass. The proceeds from the concert will benefit the Flying
Monkey Arts Center. The music will include everything from Latin American,
classical, jazz, and blues to improvisation, and the usual wackiness that is
involved with an Acoustic Cabaret show. In between pieces Phil will be roasted
by his friends who have had to put up with him all these years. As a guitarist
Phil Weaver has been performing for over thirty years, in the United States
and abroad. He was the first guitarist to be awarded an individual artist's
fellowship from the Alabama State Council on the Arts. He performed his European
debut with solo concerts for the Nonsuch Guitar Society in London and the Old
Malthouse Music Society in Sawbridgeworth. Phil Weaver is the founder and artistic
director of the City Lights and Stars Series for Burritt Museum in Huntsville
and is an Adjunct Assistant Professor of Music at the University of Alabama
in Huntsville, where he directs the guitar program. The Flying Monkey is a
smoke free environment. For more information the website is flyingmonkeyarts.org

Saturday
- 10th - Abel
Raises Cain, Admission
$5 (8pm)
co-sponsored by The Film
Co-op
As far back as
she can remember, Jenny Abel has seen her father appear on television
under a variety of aliases, fooling news reporters and talk show
hosts. He was continually plotting new ways to infiltrate the media
with one of his seemingly absurd causes.
Throughout the years, people have accused him of being a scam artist or an
impostor. But to Jenny, he was always just a father with a unique profession.
Alan Abel, by trade, is a professional prankster. His hoaxing career began
in the late 1950s with a campaign to clothe all animals for the sake of decency.
Even though it was a satirical commentary on censorship, his slogan, "A nude
horse is a rude horse," was plastered on the front page of newspapers all over
the country.
Fueled by the overwhelming response he received from this simple yet silly
idea, Abel continued concocting a myriad of elaborate hoaxes and schemes, all
designed to provoke and amuse. Permeating the airwaves with such stunts as
Euthanasia Cruises and the KKK Symphony Orchestra, he has never been afraid
to go to ridiculous lengths in order to expose what he believes to be an injustice.
Alan Abel continues to wreak havoc in the media. His story is brought to light
for the first time in this amusing and touching documentary by daughter Jenny
Abel, who not only has had a ringside seat to his antics throughout her lifetime
but, on several occasions, was also an unwitting accomplice to his mischief.
Jenny explores why her father is hailed by some journalists as the "world's
greatest hoaxer" and scorned by others as a complete menace to the media. She
reflects on what it was like growing up with a prankster and follows her father
on the road with his most recent hoax, a campaign to ban breastfeeding.
Abel Raises Cain attempts to explain the true motives behind Alan's
hoaxes and, in the process, allows for a different perspective on how the media
operates. The film echoes Abel's ultimate message — that you can't believe
everything you see, read or hear.

Wednesday - 14th
- Thollem Mcdonas (8pm)
Thollem Mcdonas,
pianist/vocalist/composer/improviser, recipient of the 2006 National
Endowment of the Arts. After graduating with degrees in both piano
performance and composition he chose to become homeless for several
years, opting to wander and live out of a backpack, rather than
pursue a career as a concert pianist with a suit and tie. It is
because of these dichotomies and rich, wildly disparate experiences
that his music is so dynamic and appeals to such a wide variety
of audiences. Currently Thollem primarily plays his own comprovisations
which he calls post-classical circus punk world jazz free music,
for people and everyone else. His music whispers/screams, "there
are as many worlds in a life as there are lives in the world".
