May 31st and June 1st will be the ninth annual Cigar Box Guitar Festival at Flying Monkey Arts / Lowe Mill Arts and Entertainment. The initial Cigar Box Guitar Extravaganza in 2005 was co-sponsored by the visual and performing arts collective, Flying Monkey Arts and Matt Crunk, a North Al. musician, builder and tatoo artist. Since that time the festival has hosted the Cigar Box Guitar Museum Collections of Shane Speal and Bill Jehle. Both of these collections showcase the folk art crafts of cigar box guitars, violins, ukeleles, mandolins and banjo from antique to contemporary pieces. With exhibits, a builders competition, workshops, demonstrations and lots of live music, the Cigar Box Guitar Festival strengthens the resurgence of folk and contemporary craftsmanship. Musical styles range from old time, blues, swing, folk, americana to punk rock. Performers include international favorites; Microwave Dave, Johnny Lowebow, and Hymn for Her, festival favorites; Justin Johnson as well as April Mae and the Junebugs and regional music makers; Texicans, Pat and John Nickel and Little Johnny Kantreed. The Film Co-op studio screening will host, "Songs Inside the Box" a documentary by Max Shores that toured internationally in 2012 and was shot primarily at previous Flying Monkey festivals. The film features beautiful watercolor portraits by Yuri Osaki of many of the now legendary cigar box guitar performers. Lowe Mill Arts and Entertainment and the Flying Monkey Arts Cigar Box Guitar Festival in its original historic location have matured into a vibrant visual and performing arts community.
